CENTCOM Activity:

  • In the last 24 hours, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which is responsible for overseeing American military operations in the Middle East, Central Asia, and parts of South Asia, announced that its forces have successfully neutralized eight Houthi uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) in a Houthi-controlled region of Yemen. Additionally, partner forces destroyed one Houthi uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) over the Gulf of Aden. There have been no reported injuries or damage to U.S., coalition, or merchant vessels. These systems were deemed an imminent threat to the safety of U.S. and coalition forces, as well as merchant vessels in the area.
  • In a separate announcement, CENTCOM reported that, over the past 48hrs, its forces also destroyed four Houthi radars and one uncrewed surface vessel (USV) in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen. Furthermore, they successfully eliminated an Iranian-backed Houthi uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) over the Red Sea. No injuries or damages were reported among U.S., coalition, or merchant vessels. These measures were taken to protect the freedom of navigation and enhance the security of international waters.

Chinese AI Military Commander:

  • Chinese scientists have developed an AI military commander in a laboratory at the Joint Operations College of the National Defence University in Shijiazhuang, Hebei province. This AI mirrors human military leaders in experience, thought patterns, personality, and even flaws. Although it has been granted supreme command authority in large-scale computer war games involving all branches of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), it is strictly confined to the laboratory. The project, revealed in May through a peer-reviewed paper in the Chinese-language journal Common Control & Simulation, was led by senior engineer Jia Chenxing.
  • In China, it is forbidden for artificial intelligence to lead the armed forces, adhering to the principle that the party commands the gun, meaning only the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China has the authority to mobilize the PLA. However, AI's ability to make independent decisions has allowed forward-deployed units, including drones and robotic dogs, more freedom of movement and the power to fire. Despite this, command authority remains firmly in human hands at headquarters.
  • The AI commander can stand in for human commanders during large-scale virtual battles or exercises when senior PLA commanders are unavailable, simulating various combat styles and decision-making strategies. The AI's reliance on empirical knowledge rather than pure analysis simulates human decision-making under pressure but includes a size limit on its memory to replicate human forgetfulness. This ensures the AI commander can adapt and respond to evolving battlefield scenarios effectively.
  • Globally, nations are racing to integrate AI into military applications, with the United States leading the charge. Both China and the U.S. share concerns about the risks of AI militarization and the potential threat to human security. Senior officials from the United States, China, and Russia are negotiating to establish regulations to mitigate these risks, including prohibiting AI from gaining control over nuclear weapons. This collaboration aims to balance the rapid advancement of AI technology with the need for safety and stability in military operations.
