Apple Arm Deal:
- Apple has entered into a renewed long-term agreement with Arm, the UK-based chip technology giant, which will extend past 2040. This collaboration was revealed in Arm's recent initial public offering (IPO) documents.
- Arm, aiming for a $52 billion IPO in the U.S., plans to offer 95.5 million shares priced between $47 to $51 each. Arm chip designs are integral to most of the world's smartphones, and Apple, which uses these designs in its product chips.
- Apple and Arm's relationship dates back to 1990, with Apple being one of the founding partners. This partnership saw the creation of Apple's "Newton" device in 1993, which utilized an Arm-based processor. Although Newton wasn’t a hit, Arm's energy-efficient designs became dominant in the mobile phone industry.
- Recently, Apple further solidified its commitment to Arm by investing $735 million in their IPO. This investment and the new deal between the two giants indicate their deepening relationship in the tech industry.
Amazon & BMW Partnership:
- BMW has partnered with Amazon to utilize its cloud computing technology for the development of its semi-autonomous driver assistance systems, according to a joint announcement on Tuesday.
- This system, known as the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), will be a feature in BMW's forthcoming Neue Klasse electric car range set to debut in 2025. As vehicle manufacturers like BMW aim to expand their technological capacities to rival competitors, the incorporation of ADAS becomes crucial.
- These systems aid drivers with tasks like lane changes and parking and rely heavily on data-intensive artificial intelligence processes. Amazon Web Services (AWS) will play a pivotal role in this, providing the vast data storage and processing capabilities essential for the advancement of autonomous features.
- The cloud-based approach also offers BMW the flexibility to swiftly update and introduce new AI-driven functionalities that cars can receive via online downloads. Alongside Amazon's technology, BMW will integrate Qualcomm's Snapdragon Ride platform, a series of specialized chips, to power the ADAS.
