Gold Price:
- In the second quarter of 2023, the demand for physical gold rose by 20% from the previous year, driven predominantly by strong demand in Turkey and the Middle East, even as demand from the Eurozone lagged.
- Interestingly, this surge occurred despite the record price of gold in the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA), which averaged $1,976 per ounce, a 4% increase from the previous record set in the third quarter of 2020.
- The demand for gold coins also saw a significant 25% year-on-year growth. Although there was a 21.3-ton decrease in gold ETF holdings, the overall investment demand still ended up being 20% higher compared to the second quarter of the previous year.
- Central bank gold buying slowed, causing a 2% dip in total Q2 gold demand, but the overall demand saw a 7% increase year-on-year due to robust over-the-counter (OTC) gold demand.
Georgia's New Nuclear Reactor:
- A new nuclear reactor in Georgia started producing energy this Monday. Prior to this, the US has a fleet of 92 reactors across 54 nuclear power plants, which produces 19% of the nation's energy. These reactors, on average, are around 40 years old.
- Back in 2012, the US government granted approval for the construction of two new reactors at the Vogtle Nuclear Power Plant in Georgia. This was the first such approval in over 30 years. After encountering numerous setbacks and going billions over budget, the first of these two reactors began operations on Monday. The second reactor is scheduled to start running by next March.
Yellow Trucking:
- After 99 years in business, Yellow, one of America's largest trucking firms, ceased operations on Sunday. As the third-largest "less than truckload" (LTL) trucking company in the US, Yellow specialized in consolidated shipments, bundling goods from various customers into a single transport.
- Despite its size and history, Yellow faced persistent financial struggles, grappling with significant debt levels. Its hardships were further exacerbated during the pandemic, despite receiving a government loan of $700 million. Efforts to implement necessary reforms were impeded by conflicts with a labor union representing the majority of its workforce.
