Boeing Crisis:

  • Boeing announced on Monday that three of its top executives, including CEO Dave Calhoun, are resigning amid ongoing issues related to the safety of its passenger jets. Calhoun will leave his position by the end of 2024 but will remain to steer the company through its current challenges until then. Stan Deal, head of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, has already retired, and Larry Kellner, the board chair, won't seek reelection. Steve Mollenkopf, a Boeing board member and former Qualcomm CEO, is set to take over Kellner's role.
  • This leadership shakeup comes as Boeing tries to recover from recent safety incidents and criticism, notably an event in January where a door panel detached from a Boeing 737 Max during an Alaska Airlines flight. Adding to the company's challenges is the news of John Barnett, a former Boeing quality inspector, who was found deceased from what appears to be a self-inflicted injury. Barnett, who had more than 30 years at Boeing, had raised alarms about safety defects that he believed could have negative outcomes.

Florida Social Media Legislation:

  • Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida has enacted legislation that prohibits individuals aged 14 and under from accessing social media platforms. Starting January 1, 2025, this new law mandates that social media companies prevent children in this age group from setting up new accounts and obliges them to remove any existing accounts. Furthermore, the legislation stipulates that 15 and 16-year-olds can only use social media with explicit permission from their parents.
  • Social media platforms, as defined by this law, are those that employ personalized algorithms and incorporate features considered to be addictive, like infinite scrolling. This legislative move by Governor DeSantis comes in the wake of congressional hearings that focused on child safety on social media platforms. During these hearings, members of Congress questioned CEOs of major social media companies, about their platforms' algorithms and their impact on young users.
  • These discussions, which scrutinized the potential harm caused by addictive features and content recommendations, highlighted growing concerns over the wellbeing of children online. Furthermore, this law aligns with broader national efforts, such as the push to ban TikTok in the United States, reflecting an increasing desire to regulate social media's influence on youth and address the challenges posed by digital platforms to child safety.
