NYT Code/Data Breach:

  • Recently, internal source code and data from The New York Times were leaked on the 4chan message board. This data was stolen from the company's GitHub repositories in January 2024. GitHub, a platform used for hosting and managing code, was the source of the breach. The leak, first spotted by VX-Underground, was posted by an anonymous user who shared a torrent link to a 273GB archive of the stolen data. 4chan is an anonymous online message board known for its varied content and as a source of internet leaks and rumors.
  • The leaked information includes almost all of The New York Times' source code, amounting to about 270GB. The archive reportedly contains around 5,000 repositories and 3.6 million files, with fewer than 30 of these being encrypted. The stolen data encompasses IT documentation, infrastructure tools, and source code, allegedly including the popular Wordle game. The breach occurred when credentials for GitHub were accidentally exposed, prompting the company to quickly address the issue.
  • This incident follows another significant leak on 4chan involving Disney's Club Penguin game. The Club Penguin leak was part of a larger breach of Disney's Confluence server, resulting in the theft of 2.5GB of internal corporate data. It remains unclear whether the same person was responsible for both breaches. The New York Times confirmed that the breach did not affect its internal corporate systems or operations, and security measures are in place to monitor for unusual activity.

Broadcom Stock Split:

  • Broadcom Inc. announced a plan to split its stock 10-for-one following strong quarterly results and a significant rise in its share price, similar to a move recently made by Nvidia Corp. This stock split will take effect after trading closes on July 12, and trading on a split-adjusted basis will begin on July 15. The split aims to make Broadcom stock more accessible to a broader range of investors and employees, according to Chief Financial Officer Kirsten Spears. Over the past year, Broadcom shares have surged 75%, closing at $1,495.51 on Wednesday and rising another 9% in extended trading.
  • In its fiscal second-quarter report, Broadcom posted a net income of $2.12 billion, or $4.42 per share, down from $3.48 billion, or $8.15 per share, in the same period last year. However, on an adjusted basis, the company earned $10.96 per share, slightly above analysts' expectations of $10.85 per share. Revenue for the quarter increased to $12.49 billion from $8.73 billion, surpassing the FactSet consensus of $12.06 billion. This revenue boost includes contributions from Broadcom's acquisition of VMware, which was finalized in November.
  • The decision to split the stock comes after a period of notable growth for Broadcom, mirroring strategies used by other tech companies to make their shares more attractive and affordable to investors. By splitting its stock, Broadcom aims to broaden its investor base and enhance the liquidity of its shares, potentially driving further interest and investment in the company.
