Sav-Rx Data Breach:

  • Sav-Rx, operating under A&A Services, is notifying 2.8 million individuals that their personal information was compromised in a cyberattack. The breach occurred on October 8, 2023, when the company detected an interruption in its computer network. The breach was reportedly contained, and the affected systems were restored by the next business day, ensuring no disruption to patient care or prescription shipments. Network pharmacy claims continued to be processed without impact, as the adjudication system remained unaffected.
  • Although the attack was contained, the intruders accessed non-clinical systems and exfiltrated personal information, including names, addresses, dates of birth, email addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, eligibility data, and insurance identification numbers. Sav-Rx informed the Maine Attorney General’s office that 2,812,336 individuals were impacted by the breach. The company has not disclosed whether ransomware was involved or who the responsible threat actor might be, but the notification letter implies that a ransom may have been paid to prevent the dissemination of stolen data.
  • In response to the breach, Sav-Rx has worked with external cybersecurity experts to ensure that the compromised data was destroyed and not further disseminated. The company is offering two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft restoration services to affected individuals and advises them to remain vigilant for any suspicious activity on their accounts. Sav-Rx administers prescription drug programs for various health plans and organizations across the United States.

AWS Orange Partnership:

  • AWS and Orange announced on Wednesday that they are partnering to offer cloud computing services in Morocco and Senegal using the AWS Wavelength platform. This marks the first time these services will be available in countries without AWS’s physical data centers, with Orange hosting the services in its own facilities.
  • Driven by increasing demand from banks, telecom firms, and healthcare providers, Africa's cloud market is projected to grow by 15% annually, reaching $18 billion by 2028, according to Statista. Rising data consumption also boosts the need for secure local data hosting. AWS’s infrastructure will allow customers in regulated industries, such as telecom, finance, public, and healthcare sectors, to run applications locally, ensuring data residency, low latency, and enhanced security.
  • Although AWS is the largest player in the $270 billion global cloud infrastructure market, its presence in Africa has been limited, primarily operating in South Africa. Cloud computing in Africa depends on stable telecom networks, with 30 operators in 17 markets offering 5G services, and ten more countries planning to introduce 5G, according to GSMA.
