Neuralink Human Trials:

@neuralink
  • Elon Musk's Neuralink is looking for human participants for its inaugural clinical trial. The PRIME study aims to implant a new medical device in individuals with quadriplegia caused by ALS or spinal injuries. Once implanted robotically, this device will enable patients to wirelessly communicate their movement intentions to a computer.
  • The journey hasn't been smooth for Neuralink. They faced several hurdles, including an initial FDA rejection in 2022 over safety concerns. However, in May, they secured FDA approval. Critics have raised concerns about Neuralink's treatment of animals, resulting in a U.S. Department of Agriculture investigation.
  • In terms of progress, Neuralink has successfully used its BCI technology on rats and showcased a monkey playing Pong. Other groups have also made strides in BCI tech. For example, Stanford researchers managed to convert an ALS patient's thoughts into words. Another company even implanted a "neuroprosthesis" device in four individuals.

OpenAI DALL•E 3:

@OpenAI
  • OpenAI has introduced DALL-E 3, an advanced AI image generator integrated with ChatGPT. This model can generate images from complex descriptions, making it more precise than its predecessors. For example, a prompt describing an avocado in a therapy scene resulted in a cartoon illustration perfectly capturing the intended humor.
  • Unlike DALL-E 2, this latest version upgrades the refinement process of intricate details. Its ability to include text within images is also improved. The model was trained using a vast collection of human-created images, likely from sources similar to its previous versions.
  • Some competing models, like Midjourney, can produce realistic images but require more manipulation to get desired results. DALL-E 3's seamless integration with ChatGPT facilitates dynamic conversation-based image refinements, with capabilities integrating into Microsoft's Bing Chat AI, built on OpenAI tech.
  • Since its inception, the model has leveraged a technique, called latent diffusion, to transform noise into recognizable images based on training data and prompts. This technology, which has the potential to replicate or even replace human artists, led to copyright controversies. In response, OpenAI has configured DALL-E 3 to reject creating images mimicking living artists' styles and offers an opt-out for artists from their training datasets.
  • AI-created art currently lacks copyright protection in the U.S. Unlike its approach with DALL-E 2, OpenAI now suggests that images created using DALL-E 3 belong to the creators. For safety, OpenAI ensures the AI won't produce inappropriate content or images of specific public figures, like creating fabricated images of celebrities. OpenAl is presently trialing DALL-E 3 privately and plans to release it to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users soon.
