Maui Wildfires:

  • Wildfires in Maui have resulted in six fatalities, with communities severely affected, leaving many structures destroyed. Mayor Richard Bissen Jr. highlighted ongoing search and rescue operations, with some residents, including two children, being rescued from the ocean.
  • The fires, intensified by winds from Hurricane Dora, have led to massive evacuations and service disruptions, including power and communications. Efforts to combat the fires include water drops by helicopters, but containment remains a challenge. An emergency proclamation has been issued to discourage tourist visits to Maui.

Apple App Store Revenue Share:

  • The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that Apple can maintain its current app store payment guidelines. This allows Apple to continue charging a 30% tax on all revenue generated through the App Store.
  • This decision rejects a request by Epic Games Inc. that would have permitted developers to direct users to alternative purchasing methods. Justice Elena Kagan decided against allowing a federal appeals court ruling to take effect.
  • The Supreme Court upheld Apple's right to tax developers 30% for App Store earnings, overriding an appeals court's opposing decision. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals had claimed Apple violated California’s Unfair Competition Law by restricting developers from guiding users to alternative payment methods, including Epic Games' own store.
  • This issue is part of a larger conflict about Apple's taxation on developers. Apple had previously removed Fortnite from its store due to Epic's method to bypass the 30% tax on in-app purchases.

Ecuadorian President Candidate Assassination:

  • Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was killed as he departed from a political gathering in a school in Quito, just days before the election.
  • His death comes amid heightened political and drug-related turbulence in the country. President Guillermo Lasso has officially confirmed the incident and vowed to ensure the perpetrators face justice.
