Meta Threads:

  • Yesterday, Meta launched a new social media app called Threads, aiming to compete with Twitter. The app is built on Instagram's user base and allows for posts of up to 500 characters. Despite having features similar to Twitter, Threads puts emphasis on text and dialogue, similar to Instagram's focus on photos and videos.
  • Threads logged five million sign-ups in its first four hours, already showing potential as a Twitter rival. Threads is the latest move in an ongoing rivalry between Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk.
  • Despite this competition, Meta plans for future interoperability with other social networks. With its connection to Instagram's massive user base, Threads has a significant advantage over other Twitter alternatives like Mastodon and Bluesky, which have struggled to gain similar traction.

Maine Decriminalizes Selling Sex:

  • Maine has become the first state in the United States to decriminalize the sale of sex, initiated on Monday.
  • In contrast to legalization, which outright permits certain actions, decriminalization implies that the government will not penalize individuals for engaging in particular acts that were previously against the law. Up until this point, Nevada was the sole state to have legalized sex work, with provisions allowing it in licensed brothels in consenting counties.
  • The law enacted by Maine aims to provide protection for sex workers while still maintaining penalties for those who purchase or facilitate these services. Thus, it seeks to shield individuals involved in sex work while punishing those who contribute to its perpetuation.

Australian Psychedelic Laws:

  • As of July 1, following Australia's top drug regulator's reclassification of MDMA and psilocybin, Australian doctors are now allowed to prescribe these substances under specific conditions.
  • This regulatory change was driven by emerging research showing potential therapeutic benefits of MDMA, commonly known as Ecstasy, and psilocybin, a compound found in magic mushrooms.
  • These substances are now considered "relatively safe" when used in a "medically-controlled" setting to treat specific mental health conditions. MDMA is now an approved treatment for PTSD, and psilocybin can be used to treat depression.
  • However, it's important to note that both treatments, which can cost up to $6.6k per session, must be administered under supervision and in conjunction with therapy.
