U.S. Malaria Cases:

  • For the first time in two decades, local transmissions of malaria have been reported in the United States.
  • This disease, caused by parasites that female mosquitoes carry, leads to symptoms such as fever, chills, muscle pain, and fatigue. Although it is curable, malaria can be lethal, especially in malnourished children.
  • According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Florida has accounted for four of these locally-transmitted cases and Texas for one since May, though the cause of this occurrence remains unclear. 95% of global malaria cases are concentrated in Africa.

Putin's Agreement with Prigozhin:

  • Vladimir Putin recently convened a gathering of top security personnel, commending them for their efforts in preventing a potential civil war. Putin extolled their success in quelling the uprising led by Yevgeniy Prigozhin, lauding their role in protecting Russia from internal instability.
  • In a public disclosure for the first time, Putin confirmed that the Russian government had been financially supporting Wagner, a private military contractor, with an investment amounting to $1B over the past year.
  • Alexander Lukashenko, the leader of Belarus, who played a pivotal role in negotiating the agreement that halted the rebellion, confirmed on Tuesday that Prigozhin has taken refuge in Belarus. Lukashenko indicated that his country aims to learn from Prigozhin's insights, weaponry, and strategies for both offense and defense, describing such knowledge as "priceless."

Samsung's Chip Business:

  • On Wednesday, Samsung Electronics outlined its strategy to boost its semiconductor manufacturing business, highlighting its intention to compete with the current leader, NVIDIA, and other major players, such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.
  • Earlier this year, Samsung made plans to initiate production of chips with a 2-nanometer process by 2025. Now, the company has provided a more comprehensive road map, outlining plans to start mass production of these 2-nm process chips for mobile applications in 2025.
  • Following this, the plan is to extend into high-performance computing in 2026 and automotive applications by 2027. To provide some context, the nanometer figure refers to the dimensions of each individual transistor on a chip.
  • The smaller these transistors are, the greater the number that can be accommodated on a single semiconductor. As a comparison, the processor in Apple's most recent iPhone utilizes a 5-nm process.
