Canada Wild Fires:

  • Smoke from wildfires in Canada has drifted into the US, severely impacting air quality across the eastern region and affecting more than 100 million Americans, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Air travel has been disrupted, with the Federal Aviation Administration temporarily halting all inbound flights to LaGuardia airport in New York due to the smoke, and ground stops for some flights at Newark's Liberty Airport.
  • The poor air quality has reached as far as Atlanta, affecting sensitive groups in northern Georgia. Experts have advised people to avoid spending too much time outdoors, especially vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with heart or lung diseases.
  • According to weather forecasts, the smoky conditions could persist for a few more days and shift westwards, affecting areas across the Great Lakes and parts of the Ohio Valley and interior Northeast. The situation has also raised concerns for the homeless population, who have little choice but to stay outdoors.

GameStop:

  • GameStop announced significant leadership changes, terminating CEO Matt Furlong and electing Ryan Cohen as the new executive chairman. These changes come as the company reported a net loss of $50.5 million, with an 11% decline in sales to $1.24 billion. Following the news, GameStop's shares dropped 18%.
  • Furlong, a former Amazon executive, had assumed the CEO role in 2021. His tenure included cost-cutting measures, which resulted in earnings of 16 cents a share in the quarter ending in January. He also initiated a non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace, which has been struggling.

Messi:

  • Argentine football legend Lionel Messi is set to join Major League Soccer (MLS) club Inter Miami. This decision sees him rejecting a lucrative $400 million per year offer from Saudi Arabia. In a deal disclosed by Messi, will enter a profit-sharing arrangement with prominent brands Adidas and Apple.
  • This move not only underscores Messi's considerable influence in the football world, but it also substantially elevates the MLS and specifically Inter Miami, owned by David Beckham and the Mas family. Conversely, it deals a significant setback to Saudi Arabia's global sports objectives.
