Week Recap:

  • SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket launched multiple Starlink satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, using Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E). This mission marked the 10th launch for its first stage booster, previously used for missions like SDA-0A, SARah-2, and seven other Starlink launches. SpaceX has now sent over 6,000 satellites into orbit since starting the Starlink project in 2019, significantly contributing to satellite infrastructure globally.
  • Cuba is currently facing a severe economic crisis that has led to widespread protests across the nation. The primary grievances fueling these protests include acute food shortages, causing widespread hunger among the Cuban people. The situation is further aggravated by prolonged power outages, with some regions experiencing electricity cuts for up to 18 hours daily. These outages exacerbate the economic hardships faced by the population, who already endure the challenges of a low average state salary in a communist economy where inflation has made many essential goods unaffordable. Political dissatisfaction is also a significant concern, with calls for change in the government's communist policies.
  • Nvidia's recent unveiling of Project GROOT represents a major stride toward the era of humanoid robots, particularly for industrial applications. Announced at Nvidia GTC 2024, Project GROOT (Generalist Robot 00 Technology) is set to enhance robot intelligence and functionality by enabling them to learn from human actions.
  • The SEC is examining the Ethereum Foundation and its connections to see if Ether (ETH) should be classified as a security. This investigation stems from Ethereum's recent switch to a proof-of-stake model, prompting the SEC to delve into the foundation's financial dealings and relationships with U.S. companies. Through these subpoenas, the SEC aims to gather enough information to potentially regulate ETH as a security, reflecting its broader goal to oversee the rapidly changing digital currency sector in alignment with current financial regulations.
  • IBM and NASA have teamed up to develop new language models (AI) trained on scientific papers. These models, built with advanced technology called transformer architecture, are good at tasks like sorting text, pulling out key information, answering questions, and finding specific data. They're available for anyone to use on a platform called Hugging Face.
  • The Justice Department has initiated an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, accusing the company of unlawfully keeping control over its iPhone environment by excluding rival services. Apple has vowed to challenge the lawsuit, stating it undermines the company's core identity and the values that differentiate Apple's products in highly competitive markets. Apple argues that a win for the U.S. government in this case would not only impede its ability to innovate but also set a concerning precedent by allowing government intervention in technology design.
  • On Wednesday, President Biden announced a support package for Intel, totaling nearly $20 billion in grants and loans. This financial boost, the largest the U.S. government has ever provided for cutting-edge chip manufacturing, aims to significantly increase Intel's semiconductor production within the country. Specifically, the support includes $8.5 billion in grants and up to $11 billion in loans for Intel's operations in Arizona, which will be allocated towards the construction of two new facilities and the renovation of an existing one.
  • Russia experienced its most devastating terrorist attack in recent years, resulting in over 100 fatalities and over 145 injuries, following an assault involving gunfire and explosives at a concert venue located on Moscow's outskirts. The attack, executed by individuals in military attire, has prompted ongoing investigations.
  • On March 21, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) carried out a humanitarian airdrop operation in Northern Gaza at 1:30 p.m. Gaza time, aiming to deliver essential supplies to civilians impacted by ongoing conflicts. The operation utilized two C-17 U.S. Air Force aircraft and involved U.S. Army soldiers skilled in aerial delivery, successfully dropping over 50,600 meal equivalents. In a related security operation on the same day, from 8:50 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. Sanaa time, CENTCOM and coalition forces neutralized threats posed by the Houthi group, destroying one unmanned surface vessel and two anti-ship ballistic missiles targeting the Red Sea.
  • The following day, March 22, CENTCOM forces continued their defensive actions by engaging and destroying four unmanned aerial vehicles and intercepting four anti-ship ballistic missiles launched by the Houthi group towards the Red Sea, ensuring no harm came to U.S., coalition, or commercial ships. Additionally, strikes were carried out against three Houthi underground storage facilities, targeting the infrastructure used to facilitate attacks on naval and merchant ships.

UnitedHealth Cyberattack:

  • A hacker group known as ALPHV or BlackCat launched a cyberattack on UnitedHealth Group's Change Healthcare unit on February 21, causing significant disruptions in its software services. This attack impacted the processing of medical claims in the U.S., delaying payments to doctors and healthcare facilities.
  • The breach was severe enough to prompt a U.S. government investigation, with community health centers serving over 30 million underprivileged and uninsured individuals among the hardest hit. In response, UnitedHealth announced on Friday that Change Healthcare will begin addressing the backlog of medical claims worth over $14 billion.
  • The company has provided more than $2.5 billion in advanced payments to support healthcare providers financially strained by the outage, up from the $2 billion reported earlier in the week. Change Healthcare plays a critical role in the American healthcare system, which relies extensively on insurance. It processes half of all medical claims in the country for nearly 900,000 physicians, 33,000 pharmacies, 5,500 hospitals, and 600 laboratories.

SpaceX Launch:

  • Yesterday, at 11:09 PM EST SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket deployed 23 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit. The launch took place at Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) within NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The first stage booster used for this launch marked its 19th journey to space, having previously supported a variety of missions including GPS III-3, Turksat 5A, Transporter-2, Intelsat G-33/G-34, Transporter-6, Intuitive Machines IM-1, and now a total of 13 Starlink missions.
  • These Starlink satellites, part of SpaceX's project to provide global internet coverage, are designed to orbit the Earth at a lower altitude than traditional satellites. This placement allows for reduced communication latency and increased internet speeds, making broadband accessible even in remote and underserved areas around the world. The Starlink satellites are positioned in low-Earth orbit (LEO), which ranges from about 180 to 2,000 kilometers (approximately 112 to 1,242 miles) above the Earth's surface.
  • This altitude is significantly lower than that of traditional geostationary satellites, which orbit at approximately 35,786 kilometers (about 22,236 miles) above the Equator. The closer proximity of LEO satellites to the Earth allows for faster data transmission times, resulting in lower latency and quicker internet speeds.
