TikTok Account Vulnerability:

  • Over the past week, attackers have successfully hijacked several high-profile TikTok accounts of companies and celebrities by exploiting a zero-day vulnerability in the app's direct messaging feature. Zero-day vulnerabilities are security flaws that lack an official fix or public disclosure. The compromised accounts include those of Sony and CNN, with CNN's account being the first to be attacked. According to Forbes, the exploit allowed attackers to gain control simply by having the target open a malicious message, without requiring any downloads or link clicks. In response, TikTok has taken down the affected accounts to prevent further misuse.
  • While TikTok's initial analysis indicates only a small number of accounts were compromised, the company has not disclosed the precise number of affected users or details about the exploited vulnerability until it is fully resolved. This incident is not the first security challenge for TikTok. In August 2022, the company patched an Android app vulnerability discovered by Microsoft that allowed hackers to take over accounts with a single tap. Previously, TikTok addressed security flaws that permitted attackers to bypass privacy settings, steal private information, and hijack accounts registered through third-party apps. These ongoing issues underscore the platform's need to continually strengthen its security measures.

Tesla Nvidia GPU’s:

  • Elon Musk is facing scrutiny for allegedly redirecting Tesla resources to his other ventures, specifically involving high-end H100 GPU clusters from Nvidia. According to CNBC's Lora Kolodny, Tesla had ordered these GPUs, but emails from Nvidia staff indicate that Musk redirected 12,000 GPUs to his social media company, X. This situation has raised questions about Tesla’s current business direction, as Musk has stated that Tesla is transitioning from an electric car company to an AI and robotics firm.
  • In April, Musk informed investors that Tesla had spent $1 billion on GPUs in the first quarter of 2024, nearly matching its research and development expenditure. This investment in AI technology comes at a time when Tesla is addressing declining car sales in the US and China and is in need of new models. Additionally, Tesla has reduced the price of its full-self driving (FSD) assist feature and plans to roll it out in China.
  • The company aims to enhance this driver assist technology, which is offered as a subscription service, potentially increasing profit margins compared to car sales. The decision to redirect GPUs to X is notable because Tesla has been developing its own supercomputer, Dojo, for AI purposes. Musk has mentioned that if Tesla could secure enough H100 GPUs, Dojo might not be necessary. However, internal Nvidia communications suggest that Musk redirected GPUs meant for Tesla to X. It remains unclear whether these GPUs were specifically purchased by Tesla, by Elon Musk himself, or his corporation, X Corp.
