Trending:

  • Following Donald Trump’s recent election win, several countries that were previously critical of the U.S. are shifting their stance. Russian President Vladimir Putin, for instance, has recently softened his tone toward the West, even stating that the U.S. and its allies are “not our enemies” and signaling a new interest in improved relations.
  • Yesterday, Trump and Putin spoke by phone about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with Trump advising Putin against further escalation. Putin’s more open stance suggests that world leaders may be rethinking their approach to the U.S., especially under a Trump administration known for direct and assertive foreign policy.
  • This change could also reflect concerns over the possibility of U.S. military action, as Trump has a reputation for taking swift, strong measures to deter threats. His “peace through strength” approach has often involved taking immediate, forceful actions when U.S. interests are threatened, which could make some leaders reluctant to heighten tensions. This blend of diplomacy and strength is similar to what occurred during Trump’s last term, when conflicts were largely avoided.

Geopolitics:

  • On November 9, 2024, a suicide bombing at a train station in Quetta, southwestern Pakistan, killed 25 people and injured 53. The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist group in Pakistan, claimed responsibility. The BLA opposes both the Pakistani government and foreign investments, especially by China, seeing both as forces that exploit Balochistan’s resources while neglecting the needs of local Baloch communities.
  • They view Chinese projects, like those under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), as primarily benefiting outsiders and strengthening Pakistan’s control over the region. The BLA has repeatedly targeted Chinese interests, including a recent attack on Chinese engineers in Karachi, to protest what they see as foreign and governmental exploitation of Balochistan.
  • Yesterday, Ukraine launched what is reported as its largest drone attack on Moscow since the beginning of the war, temporarily grounding flights at both Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, 34 drones were aimed at Moscow, all intercepted by Russian air defenses over the Ramenskoye, Kolomna, and Domodedovo regions. The Russian forces reportedly used electronic jamming and air defense systems to disable and shoot down the drones before they could reach central Moscow.
  • However, debris from the intercepted drones fell into residential areas, sparking fires in two homes and injuring a 52-year-old woman, who was hospitalized with burns and remains in intensive care. This incident underscores Ukraine’s growing use of drone warfare, even reaching Russian territory around the capital, which raises concerns about the effectiveness of Moscow’s air defenses.
  • Yesterday, conflict intensified as Israel conducted multiple airstrikes in Gaza, causing heavy civilian casualties. In one strike, at least 32 people were killed in a residential building in Jabalia, while 5 people died in Gaza City’s al-Sabra neighborhood. Other Israeli attacks targeted Rafah’s coastline, areas west of the al-Nuseirat refugee camp, and included raids in Nablus and Qalqilya.
  • At the same time, Hezbollah launched attacks on Israeli military sites in Lebanon, including rockets and suicide drones aimed at the Ain Khozlot communications base. They also fired rockets into Israeli areas like Even Menahem and Hgushim. Meanwhile, Palestinian groups fired mortar shells at an Israeli command center near the Jabalia refugee camp. The conflict shows no sign of slowing, as countries watch closely to see how the Trump administration will respond to the growing tensions.

Environmental:

  • Yesterday, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Cuba at a depth of 14.6 miles (23.5 km), with its epicenter located around 25 miles (40 km) from Bartolomé Masó in Granma Province.
  • The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that roughly 66,000 people experienced very strong shaking, with 783,000 feeling strong tremors, 2.7 million moderate shaking, and 5 million mild tremors (population: 10.9m)
  • The USGS issued a yellow alert, warning of possible casualties and localized economic damage, though no fatalities have been reported so far. This earthquake is one of the most impactful events in Cuba in recent years, underscoring the region’s susceptibility to seismic activity.

Energy:

  • Recently, major nuclear energy developments have been announced worldwide, starting with the Czech Republic’s agreement with Britain’s Rolls-Royce SMR. Czech power company CEZ acquired a 20% stake in Rolls-Royce SMR, aiming to develop small modular reactors (SMRs) in the country, with plans to build the first reactor at the Temelin plant by the early 2030s. This project is part of a broader goal to install up to 3 GW of SMR capacity in the Czech Republic, helping modernize its energy infrastructure.
  • Italy and the U.S. are also advancing nuclear energy initiatives. Italy has begun discussions to lift its nuclear ban, with companies like Enel, Ansaldo, and Leonardo exploring a state-backed nuclear company to support decarbonization efforts. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Energy announced up to $900 million in funding to accelerate the deployment of advanced SMR technologies. These initiatives reflect a global shift toward nuclear energy as countries seek reliable, clean energy sources to meet rising demands and climate objectives.

Science & Technology:

  • In a major breakthrough, a cloned black-footed ferret named Antonia has become the first clone of an endangered species in the U.S. to successfully have babies. Her two healthy kits, a boy and a girl, are developing well and bring hope for conservation efforts.
  • Antonia was created using DNA from a ferret named Willa, whose genetic material was saved back in 1988. Scientists took Willa’s DNA, placed it into an empty egg cell, and then implanted the cell into a female ferret, who carried Antonia through pregnancy and gave birth to her. This process allowed Antonia to be a “genetic twin” of Willa, even though Willa lived many years ago.
  • This achievement represents a major step forward not only for conservation but also for cloning mammals in general. Successfully creating and breeding a healthy clone shows that advanced cloning techniques are becoming more reliable. This could lead to broader applications of cloning in the future, potentially helping to revive other endangered species, bolster biodiversity, and support ecosystems at risk.
