U.S. Strikes In Syria:
- On September 29, 2024, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported two targeted airstrikes in Syria that resulted in the deaths of 37 members of terrorist groups, including senior leaders from ISIS and Hurras al-Din, an Al Qaeda affiliate. These operations are part of an ongoing effort by CENTCOM to prevent these organizations from planning and conducting attacks against the U.S., its allies, and regional partners. By eliminating key figures, CENTCOM aims to disrupt the operational capabilities of these groups and prevent them from becoming stronger threats in the future.
- Just days earlier, on September 24, CENTCOM conducted a strike in northwest Syria, killing nine members of Hurras al-Din, including senior leader Marwan Bassam 'Abd-al-Ra'uf. He played a critical role in overseeing the group's military operations in Syria, and his death is part of CENTCOM's broader strategy to target leadership and weaken these groups' ability to plan attacks. This follows a similar operation a month earlier, which resulted in the death of another top Hurras al-Din leader, further dismantling the group’s leadership structure.
- Additionally, on September 16, CENTCOM carried out a large-scale strike on an ISIS training camp in central Syria, killing 28 fighters, including several senior leaders. The operation was aimed at disrupting the group’s ability to train and organize future attacks. By targeting these key operatives and training facilities, CENTCOM is working to ensure that ISIS does not regain strength or expand its influence in the region, which could lead to a resurgence of violence and instability.
- Alongside these operations, CENTCOM has also been involved in defensive strikes against the Houthis in Yemen, a group that frequently targets U.S. and allied interests in the region. These actions are part of CENTCOM’s broader mission to maintain regional security and prevent terrorist groups from gaining more power or growing their influence, while also protecting U.S. forces and allies from ongoing threats.
SpaceX ISS Mission:
- On Friday, September 28, 2024, SpaceX successfully launched its Crew-9 mission as part of its ongoing collaboration with NASA to transport astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). Initially planned for four crew members, the mission was adjusted to include only two astronauts, Nick Hague and Aleksandr Gorbunov of Roscosmos, who will spend six months aboard the ISS conducting over 200 scientific experiments and technology demonstrations.
- This change occurred due to propulsion issues with Boeing’s Starliner, which was originally going to return astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to Earth. With the Starliner delayed, NASA decided to use Crew-9 for their return. Two seats were left open on the Dragon spacecraft, and Wilmore and Williams are now expected to return to Earth with Crew-9 in March 2025, once their extended stay on the ISS concludes.
- This adaptation illustrates the flexibility of NASA and SpaceX in managing space missions, ensuring crew safety and mission continuity despite unexpected challenges. By utilizing Crew-9 to facilitate both new crew rotations and the return of astronauts, both agencies demonstrate their capacity to adapt in complex space operations. The Crew-9 mission further emphasizes the growing role of private companies like SpaceX in advancing space exploration.
