Israel vs Iran:

  • Iran launched around 360 missiles and drones at Israel on Saturday night, retaliating against an Israeli airstrike on Iran's embassy in Syria on April 1. An Israeli official reported that with support from the US, UK, and Jordan, Israel intercepted 99% of these projectiles. Despite these efforts, one missile struck an Israeli military base. The potential for further escalation looms, as Iran has threatened a more extensive attack if Israel retaliates again.
  • Currently, Israel is considering its next steps amidst President Biden's declaration that the U.S. will not back an Israeli counterstrike. On the nights of April 13 and 14, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), with assistance from U.S. European Command destroyers, successfully neutralized over 80 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and at least six ballistic missiles aimed at Israel from Iran and Yemen. This included a ballistic missile on its launcher and seven UAVs destroyed on the ground in areas of Yemen controlled by Iranian-backed Houthis before they could be launched.
  • CENTCOM's actions reflect ongoing efforts to bolster Israel's defenses and stabilize the region, countering Iran's aggressive and hazardous maneuvers that threaten regional security and the safety of U.S. and coalition forces. The recent missile and drone attack by Iran on Israel marks a major escalation in regional tensions. This conflict began escalating on October 7th, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, killing around 1,200 people and sparking ongoing conflict in Gaza. Soon after, the Houthis in Yemen began disrupting maritime trade through the Suez Canal, leading many companies to reroute their shipping around Africa.
  • The U.S. responded by launching Operation Prosperity Guardian to ensure safe navigation and to counteract Houthi aggression. This situation has worsened with Iran's support for proxy groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, Houthis, and others. Iran's direct attack on Israel, a shift from its usual strategy of acting through proxies, signals a significant intensification of the conflict.

U.S. China Cyber Deterrence:

  • The ongoing cyber tensions between China and the U.S. have escalated with the revelation of China's Volt Typhoon group targeting American infrastructure. This group, known for its persistence, has been infiltrating critical U.S. systems like electric grids, water systems, and shipping ports, maintaining access to some networks for years. This exposure highlights vulnerabilities in sectors that are essential for daily operations and national security.
  • In response to these threats, the U.S. has developed a comprehensive cyber deterrence strategy. This strategy not only involves enhancing defensive measures across fragmented infrastructure sectors but also establishing robust offensive capabilities. The aim is to make clear that any cyber aggression can and will be met with a potent response. The U.S. emphasizes the need for strong cybersecurity practices such as multifactor authentication, continuous monitoring of network activity, and rapid response to incidents.
  • Furthermore, the U.S. is actively engaging in cyber operations that serve as a form of deterrence by demonstrating the capability to infiltrate critical infrastructure in other countries, including China. This approach of "if you hack us, we hack you back" aims to establish a mutual understanding that both nations possess the capability to impose significant costs on each other, thereby potentially stabilizing relations through a form of balanced cyber power. This strategy of cyber deterrence is akin to nuclear deterrence, where the sheer destructive capabilities of each side encourage a standoff rather than active engagement, promoting caution over recklessness in state-led cyber activities.
