Russian Draft:

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin recently enacted a decree initiating the traditional spring conscription cycle, which mandates the enlistment of 150,000 Russian citizens for mandatory military service, according to information published on the official Kremlin website. In Russia, compulsory military service is a requirement for all men starting from the age of 18, which can either take the form of a year-long stint in the military or be substituted with equivalent training during tertiary education.
  • An amendment passed by Russia's lower house of parliament in July has expanded the conscription age limit, extending it to 30 years old from the previous cap of 27, with this change coming into effect at the start of 2024. The issue of compulsory military service is a contentious one within Russia, prompting a significant number of men to actively seek ways to avoid conscription during the country's semi-annual draft periods. For perspective, the order for the previous autumn draft called up 130,000 individuals, while the spring conscription plan before this aimed to recruit 147,000.

CENTCOM Activity:

  • On March 29 the U.S. Central Command undertook a humanitarian mission, dropping essential supplies to civilians in Northern Gaza at 12:17 p.m. local time. This operation involved two C-17 U.S. Air Force aircraft and skilled U.S. Army Soldiers, delivering over 46,000 meal equivalents to support those impacted by the conflict. Despite the effort, around 26 bundles unfortunately fell into the sea, though no civilian harm or infrastructure damage is currently reported, with monitoring ongoing.
  • Continuing these efforts, another airdrop was conducted on March 31, at 12:30 p.m. Gaza time. This larger operation included four C-130 U.S. Air Force aircraft, dropping more than 50,000 meals ready to eat (MREs) to meet the urgent needs of Gaza's northern communities. These Department of Defense-led airdrops represent a committed initiative to ease human suffering in conflict zones, with plans for ongoing support.
  • In related actions to safeguard regional stability, on March 30, CENTCOM forces neutralized two unmanned aerial systems (UAS) operated by Houthi forces in Yemen. These interventions, occurring at 8:30 a.m. local time, addressed threats to U.S., coalition forces, and maritime traffic, reinforcing the commitment to protect personnel, uphold navigational freedom, and secure international waters.
