OpenAI’s New Board:

  • On Friday, OpenAI revealed the appointment of new board members and concluded an internal probe, conducted by the U.S. law firm WilmerHale, into circumstances that resulted in the departure of CEO Sam Altman from the organization.
  • The new board consists of four individuals: Sam Altman, Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, a former CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with board positions at Pfizer and a role on the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology; Nicole Seligman, a former Executive Vice President and Global General Counsel at Sony, now serving on boards at Paramount Global, Meira G1x, and Intuitive Machines, Inc.; and Fidji Simo, the current CEO and Chair of Instacart, who also serves on the Shopify Board of Directors. These new members will collaborate closely with existing board members and OpenAI's senior management to guide the organization forward.
  • During a press briefing over Zoom, it was disclosed that OpenAI plans to further enlarge its board in the future. Although the full report of the internal investigation by WilmerHale was not released, a summary provided to the public outlined the main findings. The investigation pinpointed a breakdown of trust between the former board and the leadership duo of Sam and Greg, despite the board's actions being motivated by good faith. Additionally, it was acknowledged that the board failed to foresee the subsequent instability following their decisions.
