Train Derailment:
- A train derailed in southern Pakistan, resulting in the death of at least 30 people and injuring over 100. The train, carrying around 1,000 passengers, was travelling from Karachi to northern Pakistan. The accident occurred near Nawabshah town in Sindh province.
- The train's driver claimed not to be speeding, and an initial investigation found no signs of terrorism. Efforts are now focused on identifying the victims. Despite recent efforts to improve rail safety, Pakistan's rail system, which is dated and in need of significant investment, has seen several accidents in recent years.
- A proposed $6 billion rail upgrade, in collaboration with China as part of the Belt and Road Initiative, is still under negotiation. The project's financing is uncertain, as current railway revenues may not cover the loan China would provide, and Pakistan's government is already under financial strain, having received a bailout from the International Monetary Fund. The upgrade, if it proceeds, would be the largest part of China's infrastructure investment in Pakistan.
