OpenAI SearchGPT:

  • Yesterday, OpenAI announced the launch of SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine designed to provide real-time access to information from the internet. This move places OpenAI in direct competition with Google's search engine, which has long dominated the market, as well as with Microsoft's Bing search. OpenAI has opened sign-ups for SearchGPT, currently in the prototype stage and being tested with a small group of users and publishers.
  • The company plans to integrate the best features of this new tool into its existing ChatGPT platform. SearchGPT aims to offer summarized search results with source links, allowing users to ask follow-up questions for contextual responses. OpenAI also intends to provide publishers with tools to manage how their content appears in search results, fostering a closer collaboration following content licensing agreements with major organizations like Associated Press and News Corp.
  • Despite Google's dominance with a 91.1% market share as of June, the introduction of AI-powered search tools like SearchGPT highlights the search engine's role as a content engagement model and puts pressure on Google to enhance its offerings. Major search engines have been integrating AI into their services since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. Microsoft has adopted OpenAI technology for Bing, and Google has introduced AI-powered summaries to improve user experience.

Apple Maps Launches On The Web:

  • Apple Maps is now accessible on the web through a beta launched on Wednesday afternoon, allowing users to access driving and walking directions, as well as view ratings and reviews from a desktop or mobile browser. The web version, available at beta.maps.apple.com, offers many of the features found in the iOS app, such as viewing guides, ordering food directly from Maps, exploring cities, and obtaining business information.
  • Apple plans to add more features, including Look Around, in the coming months. Currently, the web-based version of Apple Maps is only available in English and is compatible with Safari and Chrome on Mac and iPad, as well as Chrome and Edge on Windows PCs. Apple intends to roll out support for additional languages, browsers, and platforms in the future. Developers using Apple’s MapKit JS tool can link out to the web version of Maps, further integrating the service into various applications.
  • Since its debut on the iPhone in 2012, Apple Maps has gradually introduced new features such as detailed city maps, multi-stop routing, cycling directions, EV routing, and offline navigation. While developers previously used the API to create web versions of Apple Maps for sites like DuckDuckGo, the official launch of Apple Maps on the web marks a significant expansion.
