Trump Conviction:
- A New York jury has convicted Donald Trump on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, marking the first time a former U.S. president has been convicted of a crime. The verdict was read in the Manhattan courtroom where Trump had been on trial since April 15. He pleaded not guilty to all counts, which were related to a hush money payment made by his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, to adult film star Stormy Daniels in the final weeks of the 2016 presidential election. The jury reached its decision after 9.5 hours of deliberation, which began on Wednesday.
- Prosecutors argued that the payment to Cohen was part of a "planned, coordinated long-running conspiracy" to influence the 2016 election by silencing individuals who had negative information about Trump's behavior. They claimed the scheme involved falsifying corporate records and bank forms to hide the payments. In his closing arguments, prosecutor Joshua Steinglass emphasized that the law applies equally to everyone and urged the jury to hold Trump accountable.
- Trump maintained that the Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office had no case and that he had committed no crime. His lead attorney, Todd Blanche, argued that the payments to Cohen were legitimate. Despite these assertions, the jury's verdict stands as a significant legal outcome as Trump remains the presumptive Republican nominee for the upcoming presidential election.
OpenAI Safety and Security Committee:
- OpenAI has announced the formation of a new Safety and Security Committee to enhance the safety and security framework for all its projects and operations. The committee is led by directors Bret Taylor, Adam D’Angelo, Nicole Seligman, and CEO Sam Altman. Their primary responsibility is to make recommendations to the full Board on important safety and security decisions within the next 90 days.
- This initiative comes as OpenAI begins training its next frontier model, which is expected to improve its capabilities on the path to achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). The committee's first task is to evaluate and improve OpenAI’s existing processes and safeguards. After a 90-day review period, the committee will present its recommendations to the full Board. Following this review, OpenAI will provide a public update on the adopted recommendations to ensure transparency and alignment with safety and security standards.
- The committee will be supported by several key OpenAI technical and policy experts, including Aleksander Madry, Lilian Weng, John Schulman, Matt Knight, and Jakub Pachocki. Additionally, OpenAI will consult with external experts in safety, security, and technical fields, such as former cybersecurity officials Rob Joyce and John Carlin, to ensure a thorough approach to safety and security in its ongoing and future projects.
