Titanic Exploration Submersible:

  • OceanGate announced that all five individuals aboard the Titan sub are unfortunately presumed dead and lost.
  • The Titan went missing on Sunday, which prompted the US Coast Guard (USCG) and associated partners to initiate a search and rescue mission. The sub was equipped with an oxygen supply lasting 96 hours.
  • As of Thursday morning, the duration of the oxygen supply had expired. Despite this, the search effort persisted. Later that same day, a remotely operated vehicle discovered a "debris field" near the location of the Titanic.
  • An official from the USCG suggested the Titan likely suffered a "catastrophic implosion," meaning it succumbed to extreme pressure and collapsed inward. The USCG and its partners will now commence an investigation into what caused this event.

J.P. Morgan Banking Records:

  • The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has issued a $4 million fine to JP Morgan Chase after the bank inadvertently deleted 47 million banking records. The deleted items included emails tied to retail banking groups, dating back to 2018, and were removed from almost 8,700 mailboxes, 7,500 of which belonged to bank employees.
  • The records, including millions of emails from employees, were considered business records that JP Morgan was obliged to maintain for three years under SEC rules. The deletions took place in the bank's corporate compliance technology department, which had aimed to eliminate conversations from the 1970s and 1980s.
  • A third-party vendor responsible for email storage failed to correctly delete the emails and did not apply the required three-year retention setting to emails from early 2018. Due to these errors, JP Morgan is now unable to comply with at least 12 civil securities-related regulatory investigations to produce communications that have been permanently deleted.

U.S. Median Age:

  • New data from the Census Bureau indicates that the median age in the US reached an all-time high of 38.9 years in 2022. This marks a continuation of the trend of increasing median age, which was 28.1 years in 1970 and 35.3 years in 2000.
  • Demographic experts attribute this trend largely to a decrease in birth rates. The median age over the year leading up to July 2022 was 38.9, according to the Census data, an increase of .2 from the previous year and a new record.
  • When examining the data by state, Maine had the highest median age at 44.8 years, closely followed by New Hampshire with 43.3 years. Conversely, Utah recorded the lowest median age at 31.9 years, with Texas following at 35.5 years.

Musk vs Zuck:

  • Elon Musk proposed Las Vegas as the location for a "cage match" with Mark Zuckerberg. Musk's suggestion, "Vegas Octagon," was in response to Zuckerberg's request for a location for their duel. The term "Octagon" refers to the eight-sided ring used in mixed martial arts events, popularized by the UFC.
  • This back-and-forth began when Mario Nawfal, tweeted about Meta's potential launch of a Twitter competitor called 'THREADS'. In response, Musk made a sarcastic comment about Earth being solely under Zuckerberg's control.
  • When another user warned Musk about Zuckerberg's Brazilian jiu-jitsu training, Zuckerberg affirmed his readiness for a "cage match." Zuckerberg, who reportedly holds a white belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, trains under Dave Camarillo, a black belt trainer who has coached numerous UFC champions.
