Taiwan:

  • House Speaker Kevin McCarthy held discussions with Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen, marking him as the highest-ranking US official to convene with a Taiwanese leader on American soil.
  • The relationship between the US and China has been strained over the Taiwan issue, with China considering the island as part of its territory, swearing to take it back by force if necessary.
  • Nancy Pelosi, McCarthy's predecessor, visited Taiwan last August. China cautioned earlier this week that if McCarthy proceeded with the meeting, it could instigate a "severe confrontation."

Israel⚔Palestine:

  • Over multiple decades, Israel and Palestine have been in constant conflict. In recent days, the conflict has been escalating with a significant number of missile attacks, raids, and shootings.
  • The current escalation began when Israeli forces entered Al-Aqsa Mosque on Tuesday, where Israeli forces attacked Palestinian worshippers. In retaliation, Palestinian resistance groups launched rockets and are conducting multiple attacks against Israel.
  • Fired from Lebanon, 30 rockets were fired, and 15 were intercepted by the Iron Dome (missile defense system), but the other 15 caused severe casualties in Israel.

US Missile Tests:

  • The US Department of Defense conducted a ballistic missile defense test over the pacific ocean. The SM-6 Dual II missile test took place near Hawaii, where the upgraded missile was launched from the USS Daniel Inouye, a US Navy ship.
  • The test evaluated the missile's ability to intercept a medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM). MRBMs have a range of 620 to 2,180 miles and can carry conventional or nuclear warheads.
  • The interception process involves tracking the incoming missile, launching an interceptor missile, and destroying the target to prevent it from causing damage.
